- Katakis -

Rainbow arts made plenty
of shooters and many of them had something that made them unique or at least
something that elevated them above the rest. Katakis is another sidescrolling
shooter with plenty of enemies, powerups and endoflevel bosses. However
it does not offer anything to really set it apart from the competition which
is a shame but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's a bad game.
The plot of the game isn't really worth bothering with as it's the ageold "destroy the aliens with only a single ship" that almost all other shooter like this use. Katakis does have excellent presentation though and it offers plenty of different enemies in the air as well as on the ground for you to blast. You start off with only a simple ship and a single blaster but some enemies drop powerups like lasers, bombs and sattilites that will stay with you to form a shield and that also fire at enemies. Also available to you is a cannon which you can charge up to increase the power of the blast, you can increase power by holding the button longer but you cannot fire weapons when you do this so be carefull. Finally at the end of each level is a large boss character/ship waiting for you, defeat it and you can proceed to the next level bringing you one step closer to your goal.
Sadly the game doesn't offer anything that wasn't seen before on other shooters. It does have good sound, graphics and responsive controls so it's still a good game in it's own right just not a classic like some other Rainbow arts games. Check the game out if you are looking for a nice shooter but don't expect anything revolutionary.

| Amiga |
Released
in 1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
For some strange reason this doesn't have the charge weapon but other than that this is the best version. |
| C64 |
Released
in 1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
For what the C64 was capeable of this is pretty good. |
