- Veil of darkness -
|
|
SSI released many RPG's in
their days but Veil of darkness takes a different approach and it leans
much more towards adventuring. You still have to do combat though but at
the start of the game you can choose from three different modes, full, medium
or easy combat, the latter allowing you to concentrate on the puzzles instead
of the fighting. The story has you flying in your plane in Romania on some
business but at one point your plane becomes uncontrollable and you crashland
near a village. Once you wake up you see the girl who found you and she
tells you that you should talk to her father, he tells you in exchange for
rescueing you he has a small task for you to complete and that is to return
a hammer one of the locals has loaned. You agree ofcourse but once you find
it it will lead to a series of events that will have you battling creatures
of the dark in an attempt to rid the village of a vampire called Kairn.
Veil of darkness uses the same engine as another SSI game called the summoner which also has a 3D view from the top and back. Most of the screen is filled by the scenery but you can drag the bottom part of the screen up to show your inventory. You can move around using the mouse and objects can be simply picked up by clicking on them when you are near them. Conversations are done in a pretty unique way, you start the conversation by simply clicking on the character but while you are talking any interesting words are underlined in red which you can click to ask questions about that subject. Sometimes the words are not outlined though for instance when you need to ask someone else about that particular subject so it's important to read the text. Combat is pretty simple, you simple have to equip yourself with any weapons you can find and you can click two buttons for a right- or lefthanded attack. You do have to line up your character first so that he is facing the enemy.
The first mission has you collecting the hammer mentioned before which isn't
too hard a task because you can only move inside the small village but once
you find it you will gain a map of the area and you can use that to move
around. Kirill, the man who saved you, will also give you an ancient scroll
containing a prophecy that a man will come and destroy Kairn the vampire.
When you read the first lines of the scroll they say a man will fall from
the sky in a steel bird and he will return a hammer to it's rightfull owner
which makes Kirill believe that you are the one who is going to save them.
Wether you believe it or not makes very little difference to him because
defeating Kairn is the only way you can leave this place so you have no
choice but to do it.
This game is somewhat of a departure for SSI but it's pretty good, ok you've probably heard the same story a thousand times but I have to admit that I kinda like vampire stories. The missions in the game are shown on the parchment and you have to complete them in that order which will give you a clue as to what to do next but there are also sidequests if you fancy a change. The graphics are excellent and fairly detailed and there is usually some music playing in the background. You can make the game somewhat easier by selecting the easy combat and to graphically enlarge any items you can pick up so that you don't miss them. Dispite this being a vampire themed game I didn't really find it scary or anything but there are times you see some blood and gore so if you don't like that kind of stuff be aware of it. I found the game pretty enjoyable and even though there is some combat you can set it on easy so you can concentrate without worrying about dying too much and I can definately recommend it.

Veil of darkness was released for many different systems here are some notes:
| DOS |
Released
in 1993.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS and Win2k PC.
The only gripe I have with the game is that you need to constantly
hold down the mouse to move but otherwise this game is excellent. |
