- Football manager -
|
|
First off this game is about soccer which in Europe is called football so it's not about American football.
I never hide the fact that I don't like soccer games and soccer in general so when I first came upon this game I was a bit sceptical about it. However the game is more a strategic simulation of managing and you just happen to manage a soccer team and you don't need to know much about the game itself to play it.
You start with a set amount of cash, ranging from 50.000-100.000 in different
versions, and you can pick any team playing in the English leages. It does
not matter which team you choose because you will always start in the lowest
division and it's your job to make a winning team out of the one you chose.
At the start you will be stuck with the players who are already on the team
but later on other players will become available for hire or trade. The
main game is played from a menu screen where you can select such things
as trading players, lending money from the bank and selecting team members.
Before a match starts you can select the players which can change the overal
team ratings like energy, defence and attack. The ratings can go from 1-20
and the team with the highest stats will often win but it is possible that
you can cause an upset and beat a better team. Besides this you will have
to pay the bills which is directly related to the quality of players you
have and which league you are in. After the seasons ends (at least 15 matches)
then the scores are calculated and the teams are promoted or demoted according
to their rankings. The difficulty level of the game which you can select
at the start of the game is automatically recalculated and if you did well
the game will become more difficult. The ultimate goal is ofcourse to become
the winner of the first division which will make you the best team in all
of England.
I found myself having much more fun with this than most football games simply
because you don't actually have to play any football. Sure the game is played
mostly from a text menu and you can't really control the match once it has
started but that is part of the game. If you are looking for a managing
game then I can recommend this game, just don't expect any eyecandy.
Overal rating: 7/10
