- Steel thunder -
|
|
Steel thunder is one of the few tank simulators that were available
on the C64 and I had great fun with it when I first got hold of it.
Later it was also released for DOS which I never played until now.
In steel thunder you get to command four different tanks, an M48A5
Patton, M3 Bradley, M60A3 and an M1A1 Abrams. Not just command because
you can also take the position of the gunner and driver.
All four tanks can be used for any mission and outfitted with as much
ammo as they can carry.
You start the game by enrolling as a private and going on your first
training mission. It's a fairly simple mission in which you have to
destroy a number of enemy artillery. You are invulnerable for the
first mission so it a good idea to get to know the controls while
on this mission. You can choose any tank that you would like and also
change the amount of ammo for the different types of weapons. You
can view detailed specifications on the tanks and ammo while you select
them so it's wise to read them before you choose. Finally you can
select one extra type of armor and then it's off.
Before you start driving off you have to do some standard tasks like
powering the engine and weapons and setting the correct view for the
type of weather and daylight. You can mark a navigation point on the
map and tell the driver to go there or you can take the controls yourself
and it's off on your first mission.
After you finish this mission you are promoted to corporal and you
can get some real missions and now that you are a commander you can
select your own crew from a roster of cadets.
Some harder missions also have a rewards in the form of a promotion
and/or a medal.
I used to play this game a lot when I got it on my C64 and now when
I played it again I quickly found myself finishing one mission after
the other. The controls once you get used to the keyboard layout are
easy to use and the difficulty of the game is not so high that you
get frustrated by it.
Even though the graphics ingame are not very good (my favorite are
the stick figures representing infantry) it doesn't really bother
me. The DOS version looks a bit better but not much.
This is one of the best tank sims that was available on the C64 despite
the fact that it's focused more on action and I can recommend this
game to anyone who would like to play a good tank game.
I suggest you download the keyboard controls if you're going to play
the game.

Steel thunder was released for two systems here are some notes:
| C64 |
Released
in 1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 V2.0 win.
The tab key is the key to end a mission and you can't change
it so in the heat of battle it's possible you hit that and cancel
your mission. |
| DOS |
Released
in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed on Win2000 and DOS-PC.
Graphics support ranges from CGA 4-color to MCGA 256 color.
The DOS version is equal or better in almost all aspects of
the game compared to the C64 one. |
