- Gold of the Aztecs -
|
|
In gold of the Aztecs you
play an adventurer who is out for the treasures that the Aztec civilization
left behind in the deep jungle. You fly a small airplane and armed with
your trusty knife and a gun you parachute out in the jungle and this is
where your adventure begins. Will you be able to get the treasure and get
away with it or will you fall prey to the natives or the many many traps
set by the Aztecs to protect their treasures.
You start the game still hanging on your parachute from a tree and as soon as
you start the game you realize that you must move quickly or you won't survive,
even when you are hanging from your chute and you don't cut the ropes quickly
enough an elephant will come and crush you. Once you get down you will have to
face natives that will try to stop you and all sorts of traps, animals and deadly
falls. Among all this you also have to solve a number of puzzles to continue many
of which involve shooting ropes or things to opens doors so you can continue.
This marks the tone for the rest of the game because not only is it very easy
to die but you'll have to do some split second timing if you are to survive. Each
level consists of several screens that you can walk across and when you die you
are sent back to the beginning or to around the halfway mark if you reached that
far. Most of the levels require you to do a sequence of actions and some require
something one or two screens earlier like a key so if you forget to do something
you´ll have to go back.
There are about five or six different areas each with their own theme, the start
has a lot of natives but once you go into the cave you see bats, crocodiles and
all manner of other weird and horrible creatures. When you thought it couldn't
get any worse you reach areas with creatures and dangers you coun't even dream
about. Once you pass all that and get near the end you will have to face the traps
and pitfalls left behind by the ancient Inca´s before you can go and enjoy
your hardwon treasure.
The graphics and sound are excellent with large detailed sprites and atmosferic
music playing in the background which are different for each area. The controls
have a real big learning curve because you can execute a lot of moves but doing
them when you want is a big issue. For instance when holding your gun you can
move it around but press the action button and you holster your gun and moving
around will cause you to jump, this is made even more difficult because sometimes
you put away your gun after shooting and you jump instead of shooting in a certain
direction. You'll also have to learn how to move through each screen because most
have a specific way of going about and sometimes even with a limited timer!
I wrote this in a previous review:
"This is because the game is so incredibly difficult and unforgiving that
I simply can't imagine someone completing the game without using an infinite lives
cheat."
At first I didn't think it would be possible but once you really get into the
game the small progressions you make each time will have you wanting more and
more and it is really addictive. Yes there are many small annoyances like the
control is sometimes difficult to graps and the slightest error will result in
death before you can do anything about it and many dangers you will have to learn
and find out the hard way. I have actually now completed this game without dying
once throughout the entire game which is an amazing feat (if I say so myself).
If you fancy a real challenge I suggest you try it and if you do you will feel
like the king of the world.

Gold of the Aztecs was released for three different systems here are some notes:
| Amiga |
Released in
1990.
Game has been tested and completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
The controls take some getting used to but it's necessary or otherwise you
won't get far. This version has an infinite lives trainer. |
| Atari
ST |
Released in
1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
Graphically equal to the amiga version but the music is not quite as good. |
| DOS |
Released in
1990.
There are some issues with DOSBOX, you cannot start the game with gold.exe
as it gives an error. Instead you have to start the game with cga_8086,
ega_8086 or tga_8086 depending on what you want. Add an A for adlib sound
or R for roland sound. ie. ega_8086 A
This version is not cracked so you will need the codewheel which you can
get, it's a text file but pretty hard to understand so I included a codegenerator
as well.
The CGA versions is pretty bad but the EGA version is almost as good as
the others.. |
