- Turrican -

Rainbow arts made some pretty good shooters and turrican is definately one of them. Like so many actions games the story is the standard you versus the evil empire etc. but the execution of this game is where it really shines. The character you play wears an armor that has great abilities like having different weapons and smartbombs that fill the entire screen but the most incredible thing is that it enables you to tranform into a spiked ball which renders you invincible to enemies and weaponsfire. There is only a limited amount of movement you can perform without you tranforming back into your normal form but it does have it usefull moments and some level parts and secrets require you to use this form.

Enemies are all over the place so you'll have to use heavy firepower to get rid of them. At the start you only have a single shooter but by destroying certain aliens will reveal powerups to change it to a 5-shot gun or a big laser. Also available to you is an electric cannon that you can rotate 360 degrees by holding the fire button and a smartbomb that will take out all but the most powerfull enemies, this is limited though so use it wisely. Other powerups you can get include a shield and energy to replenish that which you have lost while fighting the badguys. At the end of some levels you will have to face a boss character and some of them are very big and they can be very tough.

Turrican has excellent graphics and music, the screen scrolls smoothly and there are oftens tons of enemies onscreen at once. The sequel has an option on the title screen that enables you to listen to the music of all levels but I don't think this one has that option which is a shame because they are pretty good. The only thing you could really fault is that sometimes it's a bit difficult and it's quite easy to die but then there wouldn't be much of a challnge. To fans of shoot'em ups this is a musthave and was one of the best available at the time of release and it's no big suprise that two sequels were made.

Overal rating: 8/10

Turrican was released for several different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
Has the best graphics and because it uses a nonstandard slighty higer resolution means that there screen is also bigger.
Amstrad CPC Released in 1991.
There are some graphic problems with the game but I believe this is due to the emulator I used, I've heard from others they got it working properly.
Atari ST Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
Slightly lower resolution compared to the amiga but otherwise the same.
C64 Released in 1990.
There are a bunch of trainers to help you. Graphically it is pretty weak compared to the others.
Megadrive /genesis
Released in 1991.
This is basically the same as the other 16-bit systems.
PC-Engine/
Turbo Grafx
Released in 1991.
Game has been tested but not completed with Magic Engine v0.98.
Screen is smaller still than the others.
ZX Spectrum Released in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with emuZwin v2.5.
The monochrome graphics don't do the game much good.
Others These versions are not available.
Gameboy released in 1991.
