- Pinball dreams -
|
|
Pinball machines have been
around even longer than computer games and from the beginning people have
tried to capture the feel of a pinball machine in a game but all of them
fail because it's something you can't really do. Pinball dreams claims to
be the first pinball simulator and though is does a decent job I wouldn't
call it a substitute for the real thing. There is just no way to simulate
the way a heavy metal pinball getting tossed around inside a machine.
You can select from four different tables, ignition, steel wheel, beat box
and nightmare. Each has their own theme and is accompanied by a suitable
music score. Ignition has a scifi theme but the table itself is a bit bland
and empty, steel wheel has a western theme, beat box a music theme and nightmare
obviously has a horror theme. Each of the tables play like most pinball
machine with ramps on the side of the field and several places where you
can hit buttons so you can score bonus points. If you hit all the buttons
that form a series you can usually get something extra like extra balls
or a minigame. You only get 3 balls to play so getting a high score might
be difficult at first especially when you consider that often you can't
even touch the ball after launching it and it goes down the side thereby
loosing a ball. With a bit of practice you can steer the ball where you
want them to go and rack up those points.
The graphics are colorfull and detailed and they scroll smoothly and at a fast
pace. The music is also excellent with different tunes for each of the tables
that are fitting with the themes. Pinball dreams was probably the best pinball
game on a computer until pinball fantasies came out which has more realistic play
and a higher resolution meaning more detail and less scrolling. Still this too
is an excellent game and definately worth checking out. The DOS version uses a
lower resolution and has a couple of bugs so I'd definately go for the amiga version.
Overal rating: 7.5/10

Pinball dreams was released for two different systems here are some notes:
| Amiga |
Released
in 1992.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
The original and it uses the hardware of the Amiga to display good
graphics and excellent sound. |
| DOS |
Released
in 1993 ported by Spiderware.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS and Win2k PC.
Uses the standard dos resolution of 320x200 instead of the amiga's 320x256
and because of this the screen scrolls a lot more than the original making
it less playable. The sound is still good though and even with only the
PC speaker you would get the full soundtrack (though a bit squaky). The
game can be picky about soundcard settings so try a different one if it
doesn't work. |
