- Harley Davidson: The road to Sturgis -

Harley Davidson, who hasn't heard of that name, that famous motorcycle brand with the wellknown and even patented sound from the V-engine. This game is about a biker who's trying to get to Sturgis for the anual bikerweek held there, unfortunately it's only ten days away and you are on the other side of the country. You're main objective is to get to sturgis within 10 days but gather enough fame and you might even become legendary as the ultimate biker god.

You start off by selecting from four difficulty levels and distributing points among several stats, these are riding, stamina, mechanic, brawling, wealth and charisma. The first two are for the riding sequences between cities and determine how easy and how long you can ride without resting and how many times you can crash your bike and get away with it. Every biker should have some mechanical skills so when he stops in a city he can make repairs to his bike. Wealth is quite obvious but brawling and charisma have a direct effect on some events that you come across in your travels which you otherwise have no control over. After selecting your stats you start in the city of Eastport, Maine (press W for the map) outside a local bike shop where you can spend some of your money to upgrade your bike. Things like brakes, spings and even whole engines can be upgraded but every Harley has to be unique so you can also purchase items that will make it look different. You can also buy some extra sturdy clothes because being on the road on a bike is not easy. Later on you can also make repairs to your bike (press B) but unless you are a great mechanic it won't last forever and it's a matter of time before you have to buy some replacements. After filling up your tank you're off to the next city.

The riding sequences are straightforward with the differences in engine power from the various models very apparent. Too bad you can't use it because if you go over 65 mph you'll get stopped by the cops even if they are travelling in the opposite direction, sometimes you can talk your way out of a ticket but maybe you'll just annoy the officer and you'll get an even bigger fine. You can pick up stranded ladies and give them a lift which is sometimes rewarded with a gift or some hard cash. When you arrive at the next town you can choose to keep riding or you can rest a bit and check out some of the local action. Occasionally when you're in town there might be some events taking place, some of these are weenie runs, poker runs or the straight out drag race. Win of these events and not only will you gain some money but people will start to notice you as well. Not all events involve riding however and in some you won't have to do anything except show up, this is where the brawling and charisma come in. If you have a high charisma you'll have a good time and get a better reputation, the brawling will sometimes give you the opportunity to work as a bouncer and will earn you some money.

Harley Davidson: The road to Sturgis is a game with a strong licence but like most licenced games it falls short of expectations. The extra parts on your bike are not seen in the actual driving sequences and serve little more than to increase your statistics and points. The riding between cities is actually very tedious since you can't even go fast without getting instantly pulled over, there is very little scenery and the roads all follow the same path. Some of the minigames are fun for a couple of times but most of them are too short. The game does have something that made me come back though, probably the idea of riding alone on a bike from coast to coast is something that appeals to me. Unfortunately for most people the game won't offer enough to keep them interested for too long.

Harley Davidson: The road to Sturgis was released for three different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
Has a cool soundtrack in the intro but ingame there is very little sound other than the usual engine sounds etc.
Atari ST Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
The intro doesn't have the music and is therefor a bit boring, the rest of the game is the same as the amiga version.
DOS Released in 1989.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC.
The graphics are changed slightly but with fewer colors they don't look as good as the other versions. The control is also very annoying, it's easy to overstear and you must constantly use the throttle because otherwise your bike will stall.
