- Impossible mission -
|
|
Back in the days of early
computers had very little memory and storage capacity and so many things
were stripped from the games that weren't essential. That meant the story
to the game was often described only in the manual and if you did not read
it the game usually didn't make much sense. In impossible mission, not to
be mistaken for the tv series with the similar name, you play a secret agent
who has infiltrated the lair of the evil Professor Elvin and has to try
and stop him from unleashing a terrible weapons on the world before times
runs out.
You start the game in an elevator and on the map you can see the unexplored
lair which after a bit of running around you find is build like a maze.
Each of the 30 or so rooms contain items that you can search for clues but
blocking your path are some deviously designed levels with moveable platforms
and robots that can shoot bolts of electricity and are programmed to destroy
anyone in their neighborhood. You can avoid the robots by jumping over them
but sometimes it can be usefull to stop them alltogether which is what the
computers on the levels are for. You can also use them to reset the platforms
to their original position which is a must at times if you are to finish
the level. These two actions require passwords however and you can get them
by playing a minigame on two large computers involving sounds. The large
computer in the room will start by playing three notes which you must then
play from the lowest to the highest tone and if you are succesfull you will
get a snooze (freeze robot) or lifts (reset lifts). Each time you do this
the computer adds another tone so the first couple will be easy but try
doing this with 10 tones and you'll think otherwise.
All that running around is needed because you need to search all objects
like tables and clausets for puzzle pieces which if you have the correct
four pieces you can rotate to form into a block and thereby getting one
letter of the main labs password. You can call for help with the blocks
by asking a computer if the orientation is correct or if the puzzle is even
possbile. If all the action and puzzling isn't enough the game is made even
more difficult by the time limit imposed on the game. You start at noon
and you have 6 hours to stop the professor before it's too late. This may
sound like much but each time a robot gets you or you fall into a pit 10
minutes of time passes bringing you closer to your deadline.
At the time of release in 1984 games were mostly simple action games with
very limited gameplay. Impossible mission was an incredible piece of work
with a blend of action and puzzling that wasn't seen before. Little touches
like the platforms staying where they are if you leave a room, the fairly
realistic gravity and even the speech which was the first time I ever heard
that from a computer made this game way above the rest. The game holds up
very well to this day and it's really hard because I have never been able
to finish it (YET!) but if you fancy challenge I can really recommend this
game.

| C64 |
Released
in 1984.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
The first version and also the best with fluid graphics, good controls,
sound and even speech. |
SMS
- Sega
Master system |
Released
in 1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with Dega v1.12.
This is the only other version that has speech. Graphics are good
but sprite collision is so bad you can't jump over robots making the
game unplayable, makes you wonder if they test games before releasing
them at all. |
| ZX
Spectrum |
Released
in 1985.
Game has been tested but not completed with emuZwin v2.5.
The graphics are a bit toned down but the gameplay is all intact. |
