- Z-out -

In 1990 Rainbow Arts released
X-out, a scrolling shooter with some unique touches. Most of the levels
were underwater whereas other are usually in outer space and instead of
giving you powerups you were allowed to buy different ships and place weapons
of all kinds all over them using the money you got. Z-out is the sequel
and for some reason they removed the unique setting and powerups opting
instead for a regular space shooter.
Like most other shooters Z-out give you several lives with which to complete
the game, enemies scroll from the sides which you have to take out. You
start off with only a simple shooter but you can get all manner of powerups
like multishooters, forcfields and sattelites which move along with you.
Ofcourse there are mid and endlevel bosses that need a whole load of shooting
to take out.
Well this review is kindoff short but what is there to say about a shooter
that has nothing special going for it and looks and feels like any other
game out there. It's really a shame and a big dissapointment because X-out
was one of my favorite shooters out there especially the part where you
could buy your own ships (essentially lives) choosing better equipped but
pricy ones or take a load of cheap ones. So releasing a sequel the same
year is not such a good idea I guess, check it out if you want but for me
I'd rather have a go at X-out again.
Overal rating: 6/10

Z-out was released for two different systems here are some notes:
| Amiga |
Released
in 1990.
This has a few trainers to help to get along in the game if you need
it. |
| Atari
ST |
Released
in 1991.
This is a lot less colorfull than the amiga version and also uses
a somewhat strange resolution which does not use the whole screen.
Also has a trainer. |
