Queston was the first entry
into the RPG genre for SSI and it looks and plays a lot like Ultima from
Origin. You were born a lowly peasant in a land that is under attack from
hordes of monsters and even the king's armies are unable to defeat them
all. In these dark times the king has only one option to follow a legend
and has oppointed you to find the book of magic which allows the wizard
Mantor to summon these evil creatures.
The game is mostly played from a birdseye view and you start near Geraldtown
where you have lived all your life. You don't have much in the way of equipment
except for some rawhide armor and only a small amount of gold after selling
your cattle. You will have to get some weapons and supplies if you are to
get anywhere but luckily you can get some in town. Towns are also seen in
birdseye view and you can see the merchants selling their wares and such.
The game doesn't force you to act as a hero though as you can rob people
and beat up the guards, even though they are rather hard to fight. If you
cause enough trouble you will be banned from town for a long time so be
carefull not to make things too difficult for yourself.
RPG's obviously require you to gain in strenght to beat the later monsters,
you can pray at temples to gain hitpoints and you can kill monsters for
gold to buy better equipment. There is no level system but you do have statistics
like strength, stamina, intelligence etc. which you can improve upon during
the game. Once you start your quest it's not very clear where you have to
go because nobody know the whereabouts of the wizard Mantor. You'll simply
have to explore the land of Questron and locate the whereabout of his lair.
Along the way you will find dungeons which are displayed in 3D, these are
pretty difficult but the rewards will be great. Don't expect realtime 3D
or anything but they get the job done and were pretty good for their time.
Queston was written to be like Ultima as the developer has stated but added
some things as well which were later also added in Ultima 2. There are many
fun things to do like gambling for money or robbing unsuspecting people
in the castle but if you complete your quests nobody minds because you are
the hero. This game is hard though so if you though the ultima series were
difficult this game will blow your mind. It might not look like much these
days but this game still ranks highly among RPG fans and you should at least
give it a try.
