Guilty - Innocent until caught 2 -
Innocent until caught was
a point and click adventure game and a moderate hit when it was released.
It starred you as Jack T. Ladd, a notorious thief, wanted by the IRS for
not paying his taxes. This time he's still wanted and in the intro you can
see that he's trying to pull off a heist by threatening a cow, unfortunately
for him he's captured by an interstellar cop called Ysanne Andropath and
imprisoned on her ship. Soon though things take a change for the worse as
you are both put in the path of an interstellar war and soon you'll be trying
to save the entire galaxy.
At the start of the game you can select to play as either Jack or Ysanne,
both paths will lead you to the same locations and problems but the puzzles
will be entirely different. The start depicts this perfectly because when
playing as Jack you will have to escape your cell and sabotage the ship
so Ysanne can't take you to prison but playing as Ysanne the ship will be
sabotaged already and you will have to find a planet to land on to repair
the damage. Very occasionally the two have to work together to solve a puzzle
and continue the quest.
The story starts of simple landing on a mining colony to get gas for the
ship but you soon find out that all the miners have been killed by aliens
and that there is now an interstellar war brewing. Things snowball from
there when your ship is confiscated by the army and you have to steal back
your navigational computer after which you can go about gathering information
and items with which you can defeat the aliens.
The game uses the same interface as the original game with simple icons
used to perform actions like use, look and take. You can see all of the
exits on a small map which is great and you can place any items in your
inventory, anyone who's played a graphic adventure before should be right
at home. Graphically it's on par with other games and sometimes there are
even prerendered 3D sequences but mostly there are handdrawn backgrounds
and characters in VGA format. Unlike some adventures the objects which you
can interact with are often quite visable so the pixelhunting is left to
a minimum which is always good and you cannot die in the game so you can
use your time for the puzzles.
Guilty, or innocent until caught 2 as it's also known as, is a passable
sequel. The problem is that the story is quite standard and just doesn't
grip you in as there isn't a lot of interaction with other characters. The
graphics are ok but there is little in the way of music to add to the atmosphere.
The good thing is that you can play the game as two different characters
which basically doubles the replay value. There are far better adventure
games out there but this one isn't too bad, it just doesn't really stand
Overal rating: 7.5/10
