The Oregon trail was originally released way back in 1982 and it was a completely text based game back then. There have been several version released after that changing small things and such but most were graphical updates. The game is about a band of pioneers heading west from Independance, MI and you destination is all the way in Oregon. You'll face plenty of dangers and will have to survive by trading, hunting and making proper decisions about how you go about your journey. The difficulty level can be changed from a farmer to a banker and it changes the amount of starting money you have with which you can buy supplies at the start of your journey. This is the most important place to buy items as later on things get much more expensive and you'll have to trade items you don't need for others.
There isn't too much change from the previous version, the trail remains filled with the same dangers like poisenous snakes, flooding rivers and famine. Graphically it has been updated to a higher resolution but strangly most of the screen is taken up by menu buttons and the actual playing screen is tiny. The biggest difference between the versions is the hunting minigame where you can shoot animals to increase your food supply. The very first game had a textbased version where you had to type in BLAM within a timelimit to shoot the animals. The later versions had a person standing somewhere in a forest and animals whould run by but the big problem was that you could be placed randomly between some trees and your bullets whould never hit anything but wood. This time it's a firstperson affair where the mouse controls a crosshair to shoot passing game, it's pretty simple but still a big improvement on the old version.
The Oregon trail is quite a classic game in my opinion, it's good fun and it not as easy at it sounds. The game is incredibly unforgiving as making a bad decision can easily lead to a family members death by poisening or sickness. The graphic improvements don't add that much to the game but the hunting minigame is much better, add to that the classic elements and you've got a great game.
