- Renegade -

I remember a game called double dragon very well which was a sidescrolling beatem up that spawned loads of clones. Renegade is basically a oneman fighting game in which loads of enemies come at you to try and stop you from rescueing your girlfriend. Well the plot may the most used in videogames but the game add loads of fighting moves with which you can dispatch opponents with.
Altough strictly speaking the game isn't really a scrolling game because most of the action takes place in a set location, you can move around and such but you cannot go on to the next area until you have beaten all the enemies at which time you go on. Each level consists of multiple areas and the last one contains a boss who is obviously much harder to defeat than your regular enemy. Some enemies will use weapons and when they are down you can pick them up to increase your fighting chances. You will need them because badguys don't play by the rules and in later levels they even use motorcycles to try and hit you but a welltimed flying kick will send them to their doom. There can be many enemies onscreen at once sometimes up to 7 or even 8 which can get very messy but hey the life of a hero isn't an easy one.
I admit I never played the first renegade very much but the sequel was one of my favorite fighting games at that time. This game tries hard to succeed at improving other fighting games but in doing so it it fails at some points, the lack of a two-player option is definately hurting it. Having many enemies on screen is ok but when you are constantly hit from all sides it can be very annoying. The addition of proper bosses is a good thing and enemies on bikes was quite innovating at the time. The game isn't a classic but definately worthy of playing so try it.
