- Olympic gold: Barcelona 92 -
|
|
There have been so many games
based on the olympics and every four years there will be more you can pretty
much count on it. Barcelona 92 is a bit of odd one because it was only released
on Sega systems, why I'm not sure but it probably has to do with licenses
and stuff. I'm not going to bother explaining what the olympics are but
obviously there are a load of sports involved, most are pretty much straightforward
but there's one or two which are different enough. Whoever is the best gets
the gold medal and the winner is the one who gets the most points in seven
events.
The seven events are:
- 100 meter dash, run as fast as you can for 100 meters
- hammer throw, throw a ball attached to a rope as far as you can
- bow and arrow, shoot as close as you can at the bullseye for points
- 110 meter hurdles, run as fast as you can while jumping over hurdles
- polevault, use your pole to vault over a high stick (nice explaination
isn't it :)
- dive, make summersaults and such while diving in the water
- 200 meter freestyle swimming, swim as fast as you can for 200 meters
The game is different from the others that I have played in that there isn't
a single run per event but there are actually preliminaries and finals.
It's fairly simplistic though but it does mean you do not have to win every
round in order to win the gold, ofcourse you still need to win the finals.
You can even watch the preliminaries in which you do not compete to see
how your competitors are doing. The events are pretty straightforward but
the bow and arrow shoot isn't a very common event in games. The dive is
the most difficult event as far as I'm concerned as you have to actually
have to do the dive in a certain way to succeed and there are a lot of different
ones to perform. All the events have some interesting things like in the
dash you can press forward at the last moment and your character will lean
forward to get that little extra space between him and the finish.
There's so many olympic video games it's hard to set one apart however in
my opinion this game does it by offering slightly more options like the
leaning forward in the dash and the extra rounds per event. That doesn't
change the fact that many of the events are a case of hammering the buttons
as fast as you can but alas that is something which is part of the genre.
Still this game was pretty fun so I suggest you give it a go.
Overal rating: 8/10

Obviously this is graphically better than the sms version and it shows
by clearer graphics and more competitors onscreen at once. Gameplay
wise there is no difference. |

This contains all the events it's big brother has with less graphics. |

Sega Game gear released in 1992, it's pretty much the same as the
