- Armored fist -

Altough there have been plenty of simulations in the past most of them used vector graphics in which 3D objects could be scaled and rotated according to your position relative to the object. In the beginning computers simply weren't powerfull enough to produce realistic graphics using these sort of graphics. Novalogic introduced a new type of graphics composed of voxels a bit of a midway solution between vector and pixel graphics. The first game introduced was called comanche, a helicopter sim, and this game is a tank simulator called armored fist.

The game's main tank is the M-1 Abrams tank but there are a few others that you can drive as well including an M-3 Bradley and a Soviet T-80. You can choose to play a single battle or a campaign and each will let you select wether to play as the east or the west which is a nice touch that many simulations never have. The single mission is pretty straightforward but the campaign is a lot more involved and stretches out several mission after another. You don't have to do too much work here if you want because a lot of the game is more arcade oriented so you can hop in a tank and start blasting away. Not all enemies are landbased as you'll encounter anti-tank helictopers like the hind and apache as well.

Using voxels the terrain is much more varied than with traditional vector games because polygons are basically flat and you'll have to use a lot of them to create terrain. This gives the game quite a unique feel as being a landbased vehicle a tank can use terrain to it's advantage. There are some problems though as the voxels can get very chunky up close and I once saw one of them nearly the size of my own tank which is a bit unrealistic to say the least. Another nice touch are the night missions in which you'll have to drive in darkness towards your mission goals.

Personally I was never much into simulations because they often require a lot of time to get into. When armored core was released I did really want to play it because of the good things I heard. After playing it though I had some mixed feelings and there's some bugs in the game that make it less fun to play like the bad targeting system. Don't expect a true simulation here though because it's quite action oriented but good tank games aren't plentyfull so give it a go if you like that sort of thing.

Overal rating: 7/10
