- Karnov -

Karnov's origins lie in the arcades and as such it's a pretty basic sidescrolling platformer. You play as Karnov, a firebreathing Russian, who is looking to recover the lost treasure of Babylon which has been taken by an evil dragon. You can collect powerups to spew more fireballs at the same time and even some others that allow you to go places you normally can't.

The treasure was actually kept in Karnov's home village of Creamina and it is there where Karnov starts his quest. Various monsters small and large stand in your way but the powerups that you can pick up will double or triple your firepower by letting you shoot two or three fireballs at once. Some powerups are needed for the larger enemies like a shield but others like the ladder are need to get into places. The problem with some of these is that it isn't always clear which items you can or cannot jump onto as they all look exactly the same. After you finish a stage you will get a piece of the map leading to the treasure and a hint about what to do in the next stage. Can you defeat Ryu, the dragon, and get back the treasure?

There have been so many platform games it would have to be seriously good to stand out from the crowd. I know there are a lot of people who like the game but for me the game doesn't really stand out. Sure there's some fun in the game and it not particulary bad or anything but maybe it's just the conversions most of which aren't too good, the NES version isn't too bad though so check that one out if you want to try it.

Overal rating: 6/10

Karnov was released for many different systems here are some notes:
Amstrad CPC Released in 1988.
Same story as the C64 version not too good.
C64 Released in 1988.
This is very dissapointing, it uses a nonstandard graphics format and it's very jerky and badlooking because of this.
DOS Released in 1987.
Of all the nonconsole versions this is probably the best.
NES Released in 1988.
This is pretty good, smooth scrolling and responsive controls the best version overall without a doubt.
Others These versions are not available.
Apple released in 1988.
ZX spectrum released in 1987.
