- X-out -
|

Rainbow arts was most well
known for the Turrican series of shooters which featured great audiovisuals
and action. X-out, or crossout, is another great shooter that added some
extra's to the standard side-scrolling that was quite common at that time.
Instead of giving you a set number of lives and weapons that could be powered
up you are given 15.000 credits with which you can buy ships and weapons.
You can choose from four different ships which are progressivly more powerfull
and can carry more weapons at once. They are all fitted with a single blaster
as standard but you can select from more than 20 different weapons to add
to the firepower of your ship. Things like triple lasers, homing missiles
and shields are all available in the shop. At the start it's doubtfull you
will be able to afford most of these however because the cheapest ship costs
3000 credits and the most expensive one 6000.
Once you buy your equipment you will have to face hordes of enemies but
for every enemy you destroy you will be given credits. You can then again
use it at the start of the next level to buy more or better equipment. Each
of your ships has a certain amount of energy that will deplete if you are
hit by enemy fire but if you are hit by a large weapons that the bosses
at the end of each level carry or if you hit any walls you will die instantly.
Because each ship you buy basically gives you an extra life it's adviseable
that you don't put all your eggs in one basket and buy several smaller ships
instead of one all powerfull one.
The graphics especially in the Amiga version are excellent with large bosses
at the end of each level and lots of smaller enemies on the screen at once.
Music is something that was always very important in the games from rainbow
arts and this is no exception, there are some great tunes throughout the
game. There's not much about the game to complain about really so if you
like shooters or action games in general I would definately recommend this.
There was also a sequel made, very originally called Z-out.
Overal rating: 8.5/10

X-out was released for four different systems here are some notes:
| Amiga |
Released
in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
Graphics and music are excellent. |
| Atari
ST |
Released
in 1990.
This can't hold up to the amiga in terms of graphics and sound but gameplay
is pretty much there. |
| C64 |
Released
in 1990.
Game has been tested and completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
This is the version I played most when I first got the game. The graphics
are very good for what the C64 is capable off and the music is excellent. |
| ZX
Spectrum |
Released
in 1990.
I could only get this game to work when I put the emulator in spectrum 48
mode. The graphics are pretty bad though and the game suffers from it so
I can't really recommend it. |
