- Exodus: Journey to the promised land -
|
|
There have been games with
strange subject matters throughout the years but this is has to be one of
the (very) few that involves the bible. The story in question is about how
Mozes frees his people from slavery in Egypt and leads them to the promised
land. Gameplay consists of boulderdash like levels where you walk around
picking up items and avoiding enemies in a maze. You'll face obstacles like
the murmerings of Israel and bricks of labor while the enemies are mostly
the pharao's followers while you can use the word of god and your staff.
You can choose to start the game on later levels but if this is your first
time playing it's better to start at the beginning as they will show you
the basics of what is to come. At first you can only use the word of god
to stop pharao's followers but you can also use it to open a path through
the sand or to break boulders instead of pushing them. Later on you can
collect powerups in the form of things like authority of god that will make
your words travel further or a staff that you can place down and it will
explode taking out some obstacles for you. Most of these powerups are needed
to complete a level as each one has their own layout and can only be completed
in a specific way. To complete the level you must collect enough mana to
open the path that is occasionally hidden underneath the sand so you might
have to find it as well. Between the levels you are asked five multiple
choice questions about events that happened during the exodus such as how
did Mozes survive and which plagues were put upon Egypt. Each correct answer
will give you one bible and once you have collected ten of them you will
gain a life. After the questions you are shown a picture that will depict
an event from one of the questions.
Personally I'm not sure about using religion in games but in this case they
have been incorperated quite well. That still doesn't take away the fact
that this is basically a boulderdash clone but luckily it's good enough
to stand on it's own so you can enjoy the game without having any knowledge
about the bible itself. That knowledge does help between levels to answer
the questions correctly as you'll gain lives with it. The only thing I wonder
is if there is a parting sea level which is my favorite part of the exodus
hehe. Anyway religious or not this game is worth playing especially if you
like puzzle games or boulderdash in particular.
