- Battletech: The crescent hawk's inception -
|
|
Battletech was originally
a boardgame created by FASA and it's mostly known these days from the mechwarrior
series which featured the large customizeable giant robots with which you
can fight. This game was the first to be released based on that universe
and you will play the part of Jason Youngblood. Your father is the head
of security for your clan and one of the finest mech pilots there is so
in tradition you are trying to follow in his steps by attending the academy
for mechwarriors. This is where the game begins and where you start the
greatest adventure of your life.
When you start you will be able to walk around the training compound and
there are many different shops and places of interest to visit. The main
lodge will allow you to train for non-mech combat such as pistols and swords
and you can visit the hall of legends. The shops here are mostly combat
oriented so you can buy weapons and armor which are availble for almost
every price from a simple knife to anti-mech weaponry. You will need to
have money to be able to buy any of those but luckily you are given an allowance
of 15 c-bills after a set amount of time. You can invest this money on the
stock market if you're smart and make some extra money which you will need
a lot of later. Ofcourse the more risk you take the more money you can make
but you can just as easily lose it. Don't forget that your main task is
to train as a mech pilot so once in while you should attend classes. Here
you will get various missions to complete starting from simply moving the
mech to a corner and back to eventually battling another mech in actual
combat. If you fail a mission it will not affect your training but you will
have to try the same mission again at a later time. Time at the academy
passes at set intervals which you can track because after each interval
you will gain 15 c-bills on your account at which time it's a good idea
to check your investments and see if you've become a rich man or lost your
savings. You can also talk to people walking around the academy and altough
many of them aren't very usefull you will meet people who will be vital
to your quest later.
After a while the training will become more serious until the point where
you must face strange mechs that you have not faced before. After a short
while it becomes apparent that they are from a rival clan and they have
been send to destroy the academy! You won't stand much of a chance against
them so your best bet is to run and the only place you can really go to
find out what has happened is at the starport. Along the way you might run
across enemy soldiers or mechs and even though you always have the option
of trying to run it doesn't always work. Combat is turnbased and you will
have to set all actions for your turn in advance so you can target each
of your weapons on whichever enemy you come across. The problem with mechs
is that they overheat easily so do not fire too many big lasers at a time
or you will shut down. Luckily you can also choose to let the computer fight
for you and it will completely control the fight, you don't even have to
see the combat and opt to just see the outcome letting you stay focussed
on the rest of the game. After a fight you will pick up any c-bills and
weapons soldiers have dropped and you can give them to any of the people
in your party or drop them if you don't need it, you cannot store them as
you do not have an inventory. Enemy mechs can be stripped for parts or the
entire mech can be taken if it's still in reasonable order proving you have
to skill to patch it up a bit. When you finally arrive at the starport you
will have to find people who are able and willing to help you find out what
exactly happened to your father and maybe get revenge on those who destroyed
the academy. During your travels you will recruit members, train in new
skills like first aid and maybe upgrade your mech to make it even more dangerous
if you have the c-bills to do so.
Battletech is game I played many times before as the idea of fighting with
huge robots has a lot of appeal to me and many other people. The small graphics
don't really capture the feel of huge mechs but that is because this game
focusses more on the rpg element than combat. The moneymaking part of the
game with the investing is my favorite part despite it being very simple
in form. Simply buy stock with the amount risk you want and you're on your
way to becoming a rich man or maybe a poor man. Actually it's very easy
to become rich if you know how but I'll let you figure it out for yourself
but to prove it just look at the millions in my account on the screenshot.
The graphics might put off a lot of people at first glance but if you can
look past that the game is very enjoyable.
Overal rating: 8/10
