- Spirit of Excalibur -
|
|
Spirit of Excalibur is game
with some mixed elements, at the start you can adventure with some of your
characters and you can increase their statistics in combat and later on
you can command your armies against evil forces. The game is based on Arthurian
legend and it begins right after King Arthur died in battle against the
evil Mordred. With his dying breath Arthur has made Constantine the successor
to the throne but many knights of the round table do not agree with this
and as such Camelot is now in disarray. You must travel troughout the land
and gather forces so that you can combat the evil that is once again threatening
the country.
You start alone as constantine as he is concluding a negotiation and he
must travel back to Camelot, along the way you will meet citizens and not
all of them will be friendly. Some of them will give you advise and other
will ask for your help. These events are played out on a 2D screen showing
the characters in question. What you do here will affect people's loyalties
to you as when you help them they are likely to pledge their help to you
in return. Later on you are joined by a knight of the round table who will
escort you to Camelot and you can also have him fight battles as well. After
you reach Camelot things will start to get more complicated as you must
send some of your knights throughout the land to stop invading armies and
to gather more allies. You have to negotiate, bribe and use magic at times
to convince as many people as you can to join your cause. These travels
are shown on a large overhead map where you can click towns and castles
where you can then travel to. The ultimate goal is to defeat evil once again
become the rightfull ruler of England.
Spirit of Excalibur is a bit of a mixed game with many different elements
like roleplaying and strategy. However some of these parts like the conversations
can be rather slowgoing and the action sequences can be a bit short. However
combined I believe they form a game that's not bad to play if you can put
up with the pace of it all. There was also a sequel made which means there
must have been enough interest in the game to make one. I enjoyed the game
but this is one of those games where personal preference really comes in
so check it out for yourself.
Overal rating: 7/10

| Amiga |
Released
in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
This is actually the best looking version of the lot but with slight
loading times. |
| Atari
ST |
Released
in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
The graphics are lacking colors which make the game look a bit bad
but the gameplay is all there. |
| DOS |
Released
in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed on a win2k PC.
Works under dosbox but the sound is weird, it also works without problems
under windows though except for the usual sound. |
