- Incredible machine, the -

Jeff Tunnel made some pretty
good games when he was at Dynamix and apart from the three adventures he
made he also created the incredible machine, a puzzle game in which you
use all manner of objects to try and complete an objective. Objectives often
involve getting items into certain places but as the levels progress you
will have to face multiple objectives by using many different tools.
The first level starts easy and you have to get a basketball into a hoop.
The level consists of a couple of conveyor-belts which can roll so that
the bowlingballs on top of them can move. The items available to you are
a hamster which when hit by something starts to run like crazy thus giving
you a means to power the belts and you also have bowling balls with which
you can hit the hamsters. When you finish placing the items you can hit
the start button and see what the results are, luckily there is no penalty
for failing and you can try again as often as you'd like. If you complete
a level you will be given a password so the next time you play the game
you can start on a later level. Things get gradually more difficult as levels
procede and you will more and different items with which you can complete
the level. Not all items are used all the time though so you can be creative
and think up a solution. All items can be placed on the screen as long as
there is space and you do not have to place them in exact postions to keep
the frustration to a minimum.
The incredible machine is a perfect example of a game that doesn't require
fancy graphics but relies on game mechanics to create a great game. The
interface is easy to use and objects can be moved and rotated easily so
as to make things move in other directions. The game is easy to pick up
but hard to let go off as it keeps you glued with it's ever more difficult
puzzles but not soo much that they get frustrating. This game is truly great
so if you haven't played it yet I suggest you check it out now!

Incredible machine, the was released for two different systems here are some notes:
| DOS |
Released
in 1993.
Game has been tested but not completed on a Win2k PC.
For some strange reason the game locks up on my DOS system as well
as my windows 2000 machine. Most likely because of the resolution
used but the game works perfectly under DOSBOX so use that if you
have problems. |
