ZZT is a puzzle game made by Tim Sweeney, designer and coder of the unreal (tournament) games. The game's all about the puzzles as the graphics are made up of simple ansi graphics, funnily the game describes the creatures with lines such as a ferocious tiger when really you're looking at a letter T moving around. Most puzzles are centered around a single screen and you have to do something to open up the exit to the next level. The premise is to get certain items that will allow you to get into the final area of the game.
You can select to start the game from several different places, the town
of ZZT,, dungeons. The first level, ZZT town, requires you to find four
jewels that allow you to get into the castle located in the center of town.
All the jewels are in four corners of the playing area and there are plenty
of puzzles to solve before you can get to them. Not only that but you'll
have to avoid tons of hazards waiting for like unfriendly creatures and
moving walls which trap you, some of these require you to do some carefull
manouvering. At first you have no equipment at all but you can pick up ammo
lying around the levels. Health is shown as a number and when starting you
have 100 healthpoints but if a creature gets you it will deplete it until
you run out which ends the game. There are no lives or whatever so you'll
have to be carefull not to waste health but if you are able to get to a
friendly place you can replenish energy. There is another part to the game
as you can create you own levels and games and the game still has quite
a following due to this. You can find a lot of games and information on
the net concerning this. I can't say too much about it since leveldesign
is pretty much wasted on me.
First off I can't believe this game was released in 1991 with it's simple ansi graphics and no sound to speak off. Years later Tim Sweeney programmed the unreal engine which ofcourse powered the hit games of the same name. This was obviously more a programming experience for him as I can understand some of the challenges involved with creating a game from scratch. The first level was released as shareware but this is the entire package of four playing areas. It might look like crap but it's worth a try and for wouldbe game programmers it is a good example of how to create a game.
Overal rating: 7/10

Released
in 1987.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS and win2k PC.
Since it only uses ansi graphics the game works without any problems
on any machine. |
