- Xenon 2: Megablast -
|
|
Anyone who has owned an amiga will probably be familiar with Xenon 2 megablast as it probably is the most prolific and succesfull shoot'em up to be released on the system. The aim of the game is simple, blast your way across five levels filled with baddies and mid- and end of level bosses. Combine this with incredible graphics, parallax scrolling and plenty of powerups that you can purchase and you've got one hell of a shooter.
When the game screen starts you are greeted with the game's soundtrack called megablast which is a great techno style track that plays throughout the entire game.
The game allows you to select a two-player game but as you have to take turns it's really just a single player game. Once you start you fly your ship armed with only a single blaster, three lives and a health bar, nlike other shooters where you are often killed by a single hit. The downside is that if you loose all your energy you are taken back a short bit before you can continue. Powerups float down the side of the screen and you have to blast them open to reveal such things as double shots, missile launchers and lasers. These weapons can be bought or sold at the shop that appears midway through and at the end of each level. Money can be obtained from enemies who sometimes drop floating balls which you can collect. Once you get deeper into the game and you gain more cash you are able to get the more powerfull weapons that float besides your craft and fire heavy rounds.
Each level consists of a vertically scrolling screen in space with enemies coming from all over the place. Sometimes the scenery also stops you from continueing but luckily you cannot die by flying into a deadend and you can back up to get out. Midway through the levels and at the end will be a boss character waiting for you, each of these can be quite difficult to destroy as some of them are several screens in size! Many of these bosses have a nautique theme to them such as a deep sea fish and a crayfish. Much of the game also has the same theme and even the smallers enemies are drawn and animated in an excellent way. The graphics overal are great and quite recognizeable for people who have played games from the bitmap brothers before with a metallic feel to them. The soundeffects are your usual explosions and most of them are pretty good but if there are too many effects playing at once the music tends to become somewhat difficult to make out.
Xenon 2 is an excellent shooting game and one of the first games I played on an amiga when I first got one myself. It has everything a good shooter should have and this also includes a very high level of difficulty with only three lives to complete five levels packed with enemies. The ports done for other systems are not bad but none of them excels like the amiga version does so if you're gonna check it out I suggest you get that one.
Overal rating: 9/10

Xenon 2: Megablast was released for several different systems here are some notes:
| Amiga |
Released
in 1986.
Game has been tested but not completed with winUAE v0.9.91.
Still a great game after all this time and there is also a trainer for those who aren't as triggerhappy as me :) |
| Atari
ST |
Released
in 1987.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
Looks a lot like the amiga version but the soundtrack is really toned down, still not bad though. |
| DOS |
Released
in 1987.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC
.
Graphics are almost as good as the amiga one but because it only supports the PC speaker the sound is way worse. Still probably one the best PC speaker soundtracks I ever heard.
To get infinite energy at the videocard selection screen (ega, vga etc.) press F7 instead of enter and press I ingame.
This is a working version and you can complete all levels, some version stop at level 5. |
Megadrive/
Genesis |
Released
in 1990 by Kemco.
Game has been tested but not completed with WGens v2.11.
This is the most like the Atari ST version with a toned down soundtrack.

- Sega
Master system |
Released
in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with Dega v1.12.
The weakest of the systems here and it shows, the screen doesn't show the entire playing field so when you move to the left or right the screen scrolls. Also there is lots of flickering when there are more than a couple of enemies onscreen. |
