- Wonderboy in monsterland -
|
|
The first wonderboy game was a fairly basic platform game where you controlled a kid who had to run across a level filled with baddies and along the way you could pick up a weapon or other powerup that would help you. Wonderboy in monsterland follows the same basic formula but adds upgradeable weapons and armor, a much more varied landscape and leveldesign and lots of boss characters.
Once you start the game wonderboy has nothing but the clothes on his back but after visiting a friendly house nearby he receives a sword and a potion which can revive him once if he loses all his energy. After that his quest to stop the evil dragon xx begins in earnest. The enemies are still pretty weak at this point so your sword will easily be able to take of them but after a while you will get to a house where there is a boss character waiting for you. You must take them out because they often hold important items like keys that unlock the door to the next level or powerfull weapons. The boss fights take place in a single closed room so there is no way to escape other than defeating the boss.
Later levels will show more variety as you will go from dark caverns all the way into the clouds. Along the way you can collect money that fallen enemies sometimes drop and occasionally you can find secret places by jumping that will also hold items like health, money or extra time. You can later spend the money in shops that will appear in towns or along your way. The items you can get are gear like shoes, armor, shields and weapons. Some of these items are vital to continues for instance at a certain point you need to have better shoes so you can run faster and jump higher to make it to a high floating platform. Luckily the game is quite fair as often there will be a shop nearby that will sell the required item but keep track of your money or you won't bey able to buy it anyway.
Wonderboy doesn't look like it's really different from a lot of platform games but the upgrading of items, clues to extra items/rooms and the varied level design makes it very good. I played this game many times and I still like it today even more because it set the stage for the sequel which remains one of my favorite platform games of all time. The PC-engine / turbografx version is the best so I suggest you give that one a go.

The best version but it is somewhat different from the others, the
bosses are like kabuki characters instead of your standard bosses.
Overall this is the best of the lot though. |
