- Red baron -
|
|
Flight simulators were once a very popular genre but when games went mainstream they died practically died out because of the difficulty level and high learning curve involved with that type of game. Red Baron is a sim based in the time of world war 1 where people flew in bi- and triplanes doing closeup dogfighting to get air superiority over each other. The red baron became legendary because he took down xx planes by himself and he was so cocky that he painted his plane red to make for an easier target to spot.
At the start you can choose from training, single missions or to start a campaign. The training and missions are basically one stage affairs where you have to do certain specific tasks. These include taking out zeppelins, bombing runs and ofcourse the dogfights where you get to pick an aircraft and an opponent to fight and yes you can select the red baron as well. There are many different planes to choose from from either side of the conflict and each is modelled differently and the dashboards look very different from each other. The planes are armed with machines guns only as air to ground bombs were pretty much nonexistend at the time.
The graphicswere pretty good for it's time and on more powerfull machines is was much smoother and gameplay definately improved. There weren't much in the way of backgrounds but the planes themselves look pretty nice especially when you are close up. The PC version has 256 color vga graphics but the amiga has some toned down graphics, unfortunately they bog the standard amiga systems down so much that the game is pretty much unplayable. This was a time when the aging amiga wasn't able to keep up with modern pc's.
I don't play simulators a lot but I find the one about old planes more interesting than those based on modern fighters. The lack of radar and all the techno gadgets of modern planes is a lot less fun than suddenly seeing an enemy plane fly out of the clouds without advance warning. Red Baron has plenty of different options to keep sim fans happy for some time and I doubt you'll find a lot of new sims that simulate biplanes from the early 20th century.
Overal rating: 7/10

The standard amiga wasn't really a good flightsim machine and it shows
in this game as it is incredibly slow and jerky not to mention the
loading times. |

Released
in 1990.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC.
This version is much smoother and has better graphics to boot. |
