- Oil's well -
|
|
If someone didn't tell you or you weren't looking properly at this game you'd never know that it came from Sierra, the same company that made tons of adventure games. This game was before that era however and it reminds me the most of pacman. You control an extendible arm which is use to pick up oil underground but in your way are lots of critters and an occasional bomb as well (don't ask me how it got there). Get all the oil on a level and you advance to the next where you have to start all over again.
A level is a single screen devided into several layers with paths between them so you can reach lower and lower, you can manouver the arm through the layers and you can easily retract it back by pushing the button.
The oil is represented by dots and you can pick them up with the tip of your mechanical arm but whenever you extend it you run the risk of damage by one of the critters running around. You can destroy the critters with the tip of your arm but the rest of it is pretty vulnerable so be carefull when you go deeper into the ground. It's important to retrieve the arm before the critters touch your arm or you will lose a life. There is also a powerup that occasionally appears and it slows time down for the critters which means you can easily grab that oil in hard to reach places.
I've read comparisons with the classic game digger but I think the game is much more like pacman with the pellets you have to grab and the powerup that appears. Just like pacman though there is very little variation between levels and you can become bored with the game very quickly. Still I played it quite alot when I was younger but if you haven't got that kind of sentiment about it you'll only get a limited amount of playtime from it.

Oil's well was released for several different systems here are some notes:
| Apple |
Released
in 1986.
Game has been tested but not completed with the ActiveGSapp R4.
The graphics like so many older games looks somewhat weird with very limited colors, I still don't know if this is because of the emu or this is normal. |
| C64 |
Released
in 1987.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
This is the version I played most but there isn't really much of a difference between the versions here. |
| Colecovision |
Released
in 1987.
Game has been tested but not completed with KOLEKO v1.31.
This one has the clearest graphics of all. Start the game from a command line in windows like this: koleko_vos /file "oil's well.rom". |
