American football is a very popular sports in the U.S. but not so much in other places which makes it harder for a game based on it to become succesfull in those countries. The NFL is the national football league of the U.S. and this game puts you in control as the coach of one team. You can select from dozens of different teams from many different time periods dating from the 70's to the 90's.
I have to admit that my knowledge of the game is very limited but the basic
rules are like this. Each team consists of ten players and when a team controls
the ball they have four tries to get the ball at least 10 yards from the
place where they got control. If after four turns you fail to do that or
when the opponent is able to grab the ball then control is given to the
other team. Play doesn't stop until the player holding the ball is no longer
able to continue after a tackle for instance or when a goal is scored.
As coach you'll have to select the kind of play your team is going to execute and there are plenty of options here. You can opt to go straight through the defence or make a risky pass with a greater chance of scoring if it succeeds. After both teams select plays you are shown the results in a graphic screen with all the players running around on the screen. You have no control in this phase and you'll have to hope your players make the play. After the play you will get comments from the reporters with actual speech, though really low quality.
If you don't know the rules of a sport it's hard to enjoy it as well so I can't really say too much about wether the game and plays are realistic or not. I can tell you that games that let you manage a football team are quite rare as most of the games focus on the action. The fact that there are loads of teams to select from different time periods and the strategic options available to you are a definate plus. If you fancy a try at coaching then I doubt you'll find a game quite like it so take a look.
