Hugo's house of horros is
the first in a trilogy of adventure games starring Hugo, in this game Hugo's
girlfriend was captured and now being held inside a strange mansion. Hugo
must save her by entering the mansion and solve various puzzles inside to
get to her.
The first thing you have to do is get inside in mansion and as the door
is locked you'll have to find a way to get inside. It's not difficult to
figure out though and you'll quickly find your way in. Once you get inside
there will be plenty of weird stuff for you to do before you can find your
girl and before the night is over you'll face a mummy and be shrunk in size
among other things.
The interface is much like older Sierra games with most of the screen taken
up by the current location and on top a score showing your progress. At
the bottom of the screen you can type in command for Hugo to execute and
movement is controlled by using the cursor keys. The movement of Hugo is
somewhat strange as occasionally he seems to moonwalk or simply slide along
instead of walking. Objects that can be taken or manipulated are quite large
and easily spotted so there is definately no pixelhunting like in many other
adventure games. The graphics are ok but nothing spectacular and in some
cases they even look rather simplistic.
Hugo's house of horrors looks and feels a bit like a homemade game but it's
still quite entertaining. This is no game for seasoned adventure gamers
though as it is very short and it onyl took me about 10 minutes to get about
a quarter of the total points. However if you're in for a light adventure
then you won't go wrong with this game.

Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC.
On my windows 2000 system it doesn't show graphics but it does do
sound so it might be my videocard giving problems, give it a try on
your windows machine. Under dosbox the graphics also are not right. |
