- Outrun -
|
|
Outrun was originally released
in the arcades by Sega and it was one of those machines where you could
sit in a cabin and it would move around while playing the game. In it you
drive an open Ferrari across the highway with a woman sitting beside you
and with your radio turned on max. This is no pleasure ride though and you
have a limited amount of time to get to the checkpoint where you can then
select your route by taking a left or a right turn. These choices won't
affect the game except the scenery will change giving you a bit more variation
when you play the game again.
Like many driving games the game uses a simple control scheme where you
only have two gear ratio's, a low and high one, making it easier to control.
Other than that it's a simple case of steering and braking occasionally
when the need arises. Ofcourse you're not the only one on the road and there
are plenty of other vehicles blocking your path so you'll have to be carefull
not to hit them. In the best case this will slow you down but in the worst
your car will flip over. Ofcourse this is still a game so even if that happens
you only loose time and your car will be instantly ready for action again.
At the start of the game you can select from two different music scores
and I especially like the splash wave tune. The graphics are what you would
expect from a racing game with a look from the behind the car. The fact
that you can select a different course each level is a good thing because
this brings some much needed variety to the scenery which many other driving
games don't have. If you fail to make it to the next checkpoint or when
you reach the finish line you will be represented with a map of which course
you took and how far you got, quite a nice feature.
I used to play this game a lot in the arcades because many kids dream about
driving cars especially the special ones. The home versions do a decent
job of translating the game but ofcourse they don't have the biggest attraction
the arcade version had which is the moving cabinet. Still I think the game
is pretty decent and if you're looking for a fast driving game that puts
the focus on action you'll have some fun with this game.

Outrun was released for many different systems here are some notes:
| Amiga |
Released in
1988.
For such a powerfull system the game plays very choppy. |
| Amstrad
CPC |
Released in
1988.
Not on par with the C64 version. |
| Atari
ST |
Released in
1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with Steem v3.2.
The graphics may look nice but the framerate is very low and it plays very
jerky to the point of being unplayable. |
| C64 |
Released in
1988.
Game has been tested but not completed with CCS64 v2.0 win.
Quite a good version this, the music especially is translated very well.
|
| DOS |
Released in
1989.
Game has been tested but not completed on a DOS PC.
The framerate is ultrasmooth but controlling the car is a bit 'vage' as
it seems there is a lag when you press a button and the car does something.
|
Megadrive/
Genesis |
Released in
1991.
This is one of the best versions released. |
PC-Engine/
Turbo Grafx |
Released in
1990.
Game has been tested but not completed with Magic Engine v0.98.
This is the best version other than the arcade itself. |
SMS
- Sega
Master system |
Released in
1987.
Game has been tested but not completed with Dega v1.12.
A reasonable version I'd say but nothing spectacular. |
| ZX
Spectrum |
Released in
1987.
Game has been tested but not completed with emuZwin v2.5.
The monochrome graphics aren't much to look at and they move so slow you'd
think that you're driving a xx instead of a ferrari. |
